The Myth of the Ylang ylang

Date:   October 2015

Medium: Glass, Flower, Soil

Dimensions: 4 inches x 7 inches x 3 inches

A narcissus bulb is installed with glass sculptures whose form is based on a flower in the Philippines with a similar scent, filling the space with its presence. In the Philippine myth, a girl named ylang ylang has sworn to chastity, however her beauty is so powerful that she attracts a mate. When he tries to touch her she disappears and turns into the flower. Today the flower is highly prized for its scent and its aphrodisiac effects on humans. This scent in the space lingers in the space and alters the sensual awareness of the viewers to the flower and to each other.
